Friday, February 3, 2023- Pearl Harbor

 Remember….Understand…….Honor

Today we toured Pearl Harbor. It was so different than when we saw it almost 25 years ago! We were really lucky because it had been raining a lot…but we managed to get through the whole place and when we were heading to our car it started again.

Misty had some Groupon deal so we got the head sets! So glad we did because I learned a lot!!!

We went through the museum for about an hour…so much to see and understand about WWII. Then we got on the boat that would take us over to where the memorial for the Arizona was. We could see the memorial across the bay from us.

We got off the boat and toured the memorial . The Arizona was sunk and this memorial was built over the top of it.
It has a beautiful sky-lighted walkway….leading to a very sobering wall with the names of all those who lost their lives aboard the Arizona that day.

1177 lost their lives on that day- Dec. 7, 1941
It was a very respectful group, and everyone was so quiet as we viewed the wall.
Then we got back on the boat which too us back across the bay. We walked around viewing some of the outdoor exhibits. We saw this amazing Anchor they salvaged from the Arizona. It weighs 19, 585 pounds!

It took us about 2-3 hours to tour e writhing and we loved it! Then it started to rain again, so we headed for the car. We drove toward a favorite little town of ours- Haleiwa. Misty had been given a list of places to see, and one of them was a good place to eat called Banyans. It was supposed to be in Haleiwa, so we thought we would try it. It was NOT easy to find and our GPS took us to a really sketchy industrial area (where every warehouse made surfboards)….but we finally found it! Turns out, it was a good truck ! This list Misty had said they had the best fries ever…so, of course we HAD to try them. It was an adventure….but the food turned out to be really good! We had to eat in the car because of the rain tho.

Then we drove into the quaint old-town section of Haleiwa and miraculously the rain stopped! So we got out to walk around…a lot of cute shops, and, of course…another think on Misty’s list…Matsumoto’s for shave ice. It is usually packed…a pretty big tourist place, but I guess that the rain helped keep some away.
It is the great kind of shave ice with a big scoop of ice cream, topped with the ice and whatever flavor you order, then sweetened condensed milk on top! SSOOOOOOO good!

We walked around to a few more shops…acted goofy….

And HAD to buy a cute little Hawaii sign!

Then we headed back towards home.  As we got nearer we decided to show Misty Laie Point and watch the waves crash against the rocks.

Fun day dodging all the rain, but we made it to each place and somehow the rain stopped for just long enough for us to see everything!
