Today was a fun and exhausting day! Since the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) doesn’t open until noon, we decided to go do some boogie boarding/body surfing at a beach just 1 min. away called Pounders Beach…and it is aptly named! You DO get pounded y the waves there ! Chad had purchased a couple of boards at Costco here so they all used those.
Roger and I sat on the beach…mostly. Roger tried his hand at the waves, but during one wipeout the board came down and clocked him on the head, so, he was done! Ha!
After being POUNDED enough, we went home and got cleaned up and since it was our Pday we could go with them to the PCC. We started with a canoe ride which pointed out each of the 6 villages, then got off at the end at the village of Hawaii and just made our way back walking through each village and show.
This is a statue of Hamana Kalili - the Father of the Shaka (the hand sign where only thumb and little finger are held up) Hamana had lost his 3 middle fingers on his right hand in an accident when he worked in a sugar mill. After the accident, the sugar mill gave him a job as a security guard. He watched over the train yard. Locals would try to jump on or off when the trains slowed down so he would wave at them and tell them to get off. Soon these locals started using it as a sign to each other that Hamana was not on guard and the coast was clear. Later the. Ayor of Honolulu started using the sign in his campaign ads and it became popular with everyone, including the surfer crowd who used it as a hang loose sign.
The gang learned a Hawaiian game
And Landon turned out to be a master fish net thrower!
The gang got (temporary) tattoos in the island of Figi.
In Tahiti we paddled an outrigger canoe, and attended the Tahitian wedding ceremony where each married couple got to renew their vows - along with a Tahitian queen and King.
Then the family went on to do some more villages and fun, but we had to work a shift that night at the PCC. About once a week every single couple and single sister in the mission work for about 2 hours in front of one of the 3 Luau venues. We take tickets, hand out leis, do line control, etc. we cannot wear the muumuus and shirt we wear at the VC, so we had to go home and get into our PCC outfit. Tonight we worked at the Hale (meaning house or home) Aloha luau.
After our shift we joined back up with the family to eat at the largest luau. The Gateway Buffet. Then on to the finale show - Ha, Breath of Life. It is at a huge venue and is wonderful!
It was a wonderful day and we went home thoroughly exhausted !!
