Wed. May 10, 2023 - FireKnife competition

For our District meeting we decided to go over to the PCC to watch the FireKnife competition.

Our district…front: James and Kelly Mason, Barbara Dennis, and Judy Madsen.
Back row: the Mahaffeys And Jim and Cheri Craghead.

The drummer play during every competitor’s routine. Below they make fire to start the competition.

We happen to know one of the women competitors…JosieBrown. She and the young man who is our security guard at the VC, Tyler Brown just got married. She is from Samoa. She didn’t win, but did a great job! She is on the left.

This competition went to well after midnight, but we did it stay that long! Here were the top 3 in the men’s competition.

What they are twirling is a fire knife…it is a knife made with special pieces at the end that they can light them on fire.

May 3-10, 2023 - More misc. pictures

I have decided that rather than put one post every time I get a picture, I will just group several together.

These first few were taken by missionaries..  First one is From Elder Warr…who captured some lightening behind the temple during a storm. It looks like it is hitting the temple though.

Next by Sister Aldridge

Next by Sister Beeson

and the newest one we just made into a post card from Sister Lahache

These missionaries are so talented!  Next some pictures of missionaries in our family! Landon Mahaffey in Perth Australia…

And Trevor Monroe..picture showing how many transfers they have been out and the second one is on the beach. I have to be careful not to show this one to our sisters because no young missionaries are allowed in the water or even on the beach here in this mission!

A couple in Misty’s ward in California - Lehi and Lauren Acosta -came and saw us at the PCC

Some pictures with a beautiful hibiscus that Sister Padilla picked!

And last…a picture that Trevor sent with his district eating at Jollibee. I thought this one was funny because Chad used to eat at Jollibee in the Philippines all the time…all those years ago !!

Sunday, May 7, 2023- Sister Mahaffey’s Birthday!!!

What another great day!!!  Celebrated before going to church by opening some presents. CJ and family send beautiful earrings that looked just like plumeria flowers!

Then Layne and family sent a ball gum machine with M&Ms !!! Ha!!!

Then, of course, I got all the great pictures of the family with their M&Ms…… Misty’s was over the top!!!

Lindsay took pics with Colby and Cambria. Colby had just had knee surgery the day before!

Cameron was leaving for a trip for work, but he still remembered in the airport!

The Kreys always have a great pic!

Mason sent one from his apt. At BYU.

And the Monroes, after seeing Misty’s pic, couldn’t be outdone….

And Kaden sent one from BYU too!

I love all these wonderful pictures!!!
Then, after church we went to work and took the Ball gum machine to share my M&Ms with everyone .And all the sister on shift came in Singing me Happy birthday! Again, couldn’t load the video, but here are some screen shots:
Sisters on the left Drury, Matheny, Padilla….and on the right were Thornock, Bloomfield. Beeson, Brinton & Lahache.

Sisters Paje and Tautuiaki

After work we went to the Break The Fast dinner that we have on Fast Sundays. I led the music of the Aloha Oe for those people leaving:  from left-
Royden & Pauline Mendenhall, Raoul & Cynthia Sanders, Wendy Waldes, Randy & Sandra Rigby, Kim & Debra Isaacson, Larry & Judy White, Jim & Karen Talbot.

And then they surprised me by having everyone sing Happy Birthday to me!

So, all in all, with my family, the Sister Missionaries, and all the Seniors, I figure about 150 people sang to me today!!! Wow!!! What a nice day!!!

Saturday! May 6, 2023 - What a fun day!!!!

We started off the day going to breakfast at the home of Michael and Jennifer Sneddon. They are service missionaries working in the office and moved here and bought a home. They have been renovating it since last Oct. and only moved in back in March.  We had kind of a pot-luck breakfast to say goodbye to a great couple leaving soon that had been in charge of all the Missionaries at the PCC- the Talbots. You walk into their home to this lovely view!

This is our wonderful crew…(you can image how huge our breakfast was!)
Back row:  Jim & Karen Talbot, Su Jones, Grant Cannon, Pres. Sidney and Stephanie Bassett. Terry and Diane Bushman, Roger and Diedra Mahaffey, Katie Chase (nurse), Virginia Handley ( PCC), Stacy Duncan (nurse) , Kaylene Phillips, and Gail Olsen- office, housing.
Front row: Michael & Jennifer Sneddon, Shari Cannon, Michael Handley-office & PCC, Dan Duncan- PCC, Steve Olsen - office, finance , David Phillips - in Charge of missionaries at  BYUH & teaches there.

Then, later in the day, Roger took me over to the PCC and he wanted to go into the Ukulele store. I couldn’t imagine why. Then he surprised me with a new, bigger and better ukulele for my birthday. But when they brought it out to me, all the store employees and missionaries came out to sing happy birthday to me!  Not embarrassing at all……

Friday, May 5, 2023 - Matt and Chris Geddes come!

We loved seeing our good friends come! They had lived here 40 years ago when they were teaching here at BYUH. We went to a temple session together, then went out to one of my favorites for dinner- Seven Brothers ! Originally they had tried to get the France missionary reunion to be here in Feb. but it was just too expensive for everyone, so they came by themselves and stayed in a friend’s home here on Oahu.   (Sorry it is so blurry!)

They came back on Sunday and went to their old ward in Hau’ula and then went with us the Break the Fast dinner. So fun to see good friends! Made me lonesome!

Monday, May 1, 2023 - MAY DAY!!!

To celebrate May Day and as part of the Asian / Pacific Islanders week, they showed the winners of the lei making competition at the PCC.  many were made of flowers….

Some of leaves or grasses…

Some were even edible….
